Himachal, know as Dev Bhumi (Land of Gods), is famous for its Manimahesh Yatra. Yatra begins every year during the month of August or September and set about 15 days after the festival of Janamashtmi Manimahesh pilgrimage in Himachal is situated in Chamba district. Manimahesh peak is 5486m above sea level. Every year approx 8 lakhs people come from different parts of the world to attend the Yatra.

Manimahesh Yatra starts from Lakshminarayan Temple in Chamba and ends at the Manimahesh Lake in Bundhil valley. After reaching Bharmour by road, the rest of the journey is by walk. Large number of people walk along the rocky path completely bare footed. They sing Bhajans and pray to Lord Shiva. It takes about six days to reach Manimahesh Lake. After reaching the holy lake, pilgrims take a bath, have some rest and then again start the Yatra. Water is too cold, thus only the strong hearted people can take a dip in the water.

Shimla the state capital of Himachal Pradesh is one of the most sought after tourist destinations of India. It were Britishers who discovered the queen of hills – Shimla and made it summer capital of India after acquiring it from Nepal.

Shimla is a hill station in true sense. Most of the time you have to walk on foot. Being a hilly area the roads are not so wide and at places road is just hanging on iron roads. Since most of the places don’t have adequate road connectivity, transportation of goods is a big challenge. Kashmiri labour is the backbone of goods transportation in Shimla. You will be amazed to see them carrying couple of gas cylinders, refrigerator and all sort of furniture individually which normally takes at least two or three persons to lift.

Main attractions of Shimla

The Mall is Shimla’s main shopping center and is situated just above the Shimla bus stand. An evening walk on The Mall is certainly a delightful experience. If you have small kids with you, you can hire a pram for as less than as Rs. 50 for one hour. Other main attractions of The Mall road include Gaiety Theater, Kai Bari temple, Scandal Point, Church and other heritage buildings like Town hall which are still well maintained.

The Ridge which is no vehicle zone is the open space at the top. You can enjoy the scenic beauty of Shimla from here.

Lakkar Bazaar adjacent to the Ridge is famous for its wooden articles, toys and other wood-craft. If you are one of those who buy stuff to mark the memories of the places you visit or take home gifts for your near and dears, Lakkar Bazaar is the place for you.

With aim to attract high end tourists and acquaint them with the hidden beauty of the hill State, Himachal Pradesh Tourism Department is rolling over Heli Taxi Services from tomorrow .i.e. January 29, 2011. State Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal will inaugurate the much awaited service at Annadale Helipad, Shimla.

Director, Tourism & Civil Aviation Arun Kumar Sharma disclosed in a press statement issued to media today that for this service the department has already signed an agreement with Heli Taxi operators and base of operations for the service would be Annadale Helipad in Shimla. He added that the success of the service would depend upon the demand. Department has sealed the deal with three taxi operators including M/s Simm Samm Airways and M/s Shiva Heli Services and routes would be between -Shimla-Kullu, Kullu-Manali- Rohtang Pass-Tandi, Manali valley joyride flights etc.

There are 57 helipads in the state and many of them are located in tribal areas of the state viz Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti and Pangi valley. The various destinations in these areas have no access for the tourists during the winter season due to heavy snow-fall on the high altitude Passes. The department expects that with the introduction of the service, the inflow of high end tourists and corporate houses would increase, which will help in generation of indirect employment opportunity for the people of the remote areas.
